Re: Electronic Cookbook?

I think it would be a neat idea, but I have no experience with one. I do not like bringing my laptop into the kitchen, but I also don't like printing out recipes.

Re: Sayings that are outdated so kids don't get them

That's fun, Sue! Our school clocks are still analog, so it is conceivable that "quarter of," "quarter after," and "half past" have visual meaning for time, but I think those days are passing as most clocks become digital. Telling my kids to "dial" a phone numb...

Re: Easy Pumpkin Spice Cake

Muffins usually bake for 15-20 minutes; the time for this cake is on the shorter side, so I'd probably start at slightly under 15 and take them out when the centers are set and the edges start to pull away from the muffin tin. I don't see why it wouldn't work.

Re: football helmet help

Thanks for the laundry tip, Tina; maybe I should just take my chances with the bleach. I don't know yet about game uniforms; their first scrimmage isn't until 9/3. Stephen's helmet has some air fit stuff, I think, and some pads. The trainer did the fitting. He is in the largest medium, which is a te...

Re: football helmet help

Sue, were the pants the sort of heavy polyester kind of fabric? These are; I washed them in hot water despite the instructions, but I didn't want to try bleach which is also warned against. They are school issue, not our property, so not ours to destroy in the wash! I will look for the spray oxyclea...

Re: football helmet help

I greet the boys with the windows and sunroof open and the fan blowing hard... Oxyclean and detergent barely touched the dirt. I tried another round with detergent, borax, and Spray N Wash on one leg, Zout on the other. The SNW did virtually nothing, the Zout helped a little, and the borax seemed to...

Re: football helmet help

Yup, Jane...he made the move to contacts in May or so. I didn't think it was going to work out, because it took him soooo long to put them in, even after a week, and he got so stressed. But first the person who normally teaches patients, then the optician, and then the optometrist spent well over an...

Re: football helmet help

I don't think we can put anything in/on it that might stick or leave any kind of residue, because when the sweat hits it, it would turn into a horrible mess. I also don't want to use any sort of cleaning fluid on the padding for fear of damaging it; those thin layers are all the protection my baby's...

Stephen got his helmet today and it is clean but stinky. Anyone have experience deodorizing a football helmet?

Re: microwave rice cookers

Don't like doing it on the stove, and I don't want to have a big rice cooker that I need to store! One of the advantages to doing it in the microwave is that it's a little bit faster, which is also good for the way I cook.

microwave rice cookers

I had no idea such a product existed until my sister mentioned it last week. Does anyone have one, and if so, how would you review it? I have a small electric steamer that I use almost exclusively for rice, but it really isn't big enough; it holds about 1.5 cups cooked. I really need something bigge...

Re: low fat/ low cal blueberry muffins

Here's a very similar one I use. I make it in a bowl, not the blender, but that sounds like a very easy option. I throw in 1/2-1 cup of blueberries at the very end, though they aren't in the recipe. Also, when I made them a few days ago I was short on oil, so I only put in 1 T and upped the banana a...

Re: tipping movers?

Guess I'm lucky...I've had movers 4 times and they have always been excellent! Actually, it never occurred to me not to tip; we have used moving companies, and I've doubted that the movers were all that well paid, plus they've always done the little (and sometimes big) extra things that helped make ...

Re: tipping movers?

When we moved 10 years ago, I think we had 3 movers; we bought lunch and drinks for all of them and gave them maybe $50 each extra in cash. In a way it was more than that: when we got to the new house, the uber-PITB sellers were not yet completely out. They agreed to pay our movers $200 to help them...

Re: Benefits of a union?

Thanks for the responses. As I said, I"m not opposed to unions and I'm well aware of their role in labor history; I just didn't know if there are benefits directly to Tom that hadn't occurred to me!

Re: Benefits of a union?

He is salaried, not hourly, but still represented by the union. The County of Los Angeles has more than 100,000 employees, so it's no surprise that a union worked its way into the system! Sounds like the advantages are in the security and benefits that came with the job, once he'd finished his proba...

Benefits of a union?

As I caught up on Quicken entries over the weekend, I realized that dh is paying quite a bit monthly for union dues (job was new last Nov., and the dues just started in Jan.). I have no problem with unions, but I am not really sure what the benefit to him is. He works for the county as a network adm...
