Re: School Bus Safety

Wow..that is horrible! I hope they fix the situation quickly. Our kids have to wear seatbelts, are maximum two to a seat, and they are not allowed to have their legs/feet/arms/heads in the aisleway when the bus is in motion.

Re: football helmet help

I know a semi-pro football player, and he told me a long time ago that coaches don't always have the players best interests at heart. Soooo true! Good trainers on the other hand do. Does your school give the kids a computerized neurocognitive assessment? It's a computer test they take prior to the s...

Re: football helmet help

Sorry...just seeing this. Brett was never allowed to bring home his helmet. I just asked him if he ever noticed an odor, and he said no. How about if you stuff it with newspaper and put it in a large garbage bag for a day or two? That worked for a suitcase my mom had. Regarding the uniforms... our b...

Re: microwave rice cookers

Never tried it in the microwave, but I do use my electric rice steamer all the time. I usually make 4-5 cups so there are plenty of leftovers for another night (to make fried rice.)

Re: Allen is getting married!

 I'd be floored too, LOL. I hope it all works out for them. Sounds like they are thinking things through and taking it extremely seriously (as it should be). Wishing Allen and his bride a lifetime of happiness!

Re: sports practices and meals

I am also wondering if his body might adjust to the level of exercise and he'll not eat quite so much. Sorry, but that made me LOL . Maybe a little for some other sports or for young children (for instance Sean's eating habits do not change at all during baseball season), but football (middle schoo...

Re: staying up late

Yes, school nights is a whole 'nother set of rules. They are woken at 5:45 every morning and their bus comes at 6:35. Lights out is 8:30 for Sean, and Brett has to be quiet in his room by 9:30.

Re: sports practices and meals

Brett is always starving after practice/games. He typically will have a bagel w/pb and orange juice in the morning before practice. After practice he'll have a sub/hoagie/hero or pizza for lunch, with a glass or two of milk. I always have fresh fruit (especially bananas) that he snacks on. Before ga...

Re: staying up late

I'm another Sue. Bedtimes during the school year, but starting probably in middle school - summertime, If they're in, I just went to bed. Same thing here, however they are not allowed to sleep the day away. We make sure they are up by 9:30 in the summer (I call from work) and on weekends during the...

Re: kids and practice time on musical instruments

We have no schedule. Sean practices on his own for hours on the weekend, but can go several week days without practicing at all. I let him practice when he feels like it. When he learns something new or has a performance coming up, he ramps up on his own. He's very good, and played a few solos in th...

Re: Does this sound reasonable?

Personally, I don't think one gets too far forcing kids to read; it is more likely to backfire and make them hate it. Thought of Brett when I read this. He had to read Tale of Two Cities for ELA this year and HATED it. He moaned, groaned, whined, b!tched and complained through the ENTIRE book. This...
